Frequently asked
- Until when can I open an SSY account?
- Until the girl child turns 10. Once opened, you can contribute for 15 years; the account matures 21 years from opening, so the last 6 years it just compounds.
- Are partial withdrawals allowed?
- Yes — up to 50% of the previous year's balance is allowed for higher education once the girl turns 18 or finishes 10th standard, whichever is earlier.
- Is SSY better than PPF for a girl child?
- Usually yes — SSY currently pays roughly 30-50 bps more than PPF and shares the same EEE status. The catch: it's earmarked for the girl child, so flexibility is lower than a personal PPF.
